Bauer Media axes sexploitation mag Zoo Weekly

Via Mumbrella

Bauer Media is closing its struggling Zoo Weekly lads mag and website amid crumbling sales.

The publisher said the October 12 issue will be the magazine’s last, with Bauer blaming “tough retail conditions in the men’s market”.

Bauer has made the call to close Zoo’s operations. I would like to thank the teams here at Bauer, as well as the advertisers and retailers who have supported the brand,” Bauer CEO David Goodchild said.

Ewen Page, associate publisher for Bauer’s men’s & specialist titles, added:  “The staff has done a great job on Zoo Weekly over the years and I commend their work and thank them for their dedication and effort. It is not an easy decision to close a magazine and we have certainly considered all options before coming to this conclusion.” Click to read more.

Collective Shout activist Laura Pintur led our petition calling on major supermarkets Coles and Woolworths to stop selling 'lads mag' Zoo Weekly.

Following thousands of signatures on the petition, a Coles employee was inspired to make an official complaint about the sale and display of Zoo Weekly in her workplace. Coles then announced it would stop selling the magazine.

Reporting on Bauer Media's decision to close Zoo Weekly, News.com.au described Coles pulling the mag from shelves as “a move that would no doubt be catastrophic for the lad mag’s sales."

The Australian reported “While ZOO was still on sale in newsagencies and at Woolworths, its removal from Coles bit into its sales.”

The closure of Zoo Weekly includes the print edition of the magazine, as well as its website and social media accounts.

    Ricky,

I know enough about autism to know that it is not an excuse for misogyny.
I’ve seen your ‘feminazi’ messages elsewhere, I’ve read your comments on this site and I’ve now made it very clear – in my last comment and then blocking you – that I don’t want to hear from you again.

Women like you are not the type of women that I would try to interact with. There are more than just one type of woman in the world, to think that you speak for all of them, is highly contentious and disrespectful. The models in the magazine, not only are losing wages, but there voice as well. If they didn’t like it, they wouldn’t have done it. You truly do not care about equality.

I have more than one way of logging in to your site, blocking me proves my point. You really do not know anything about me or Autism do you? Maybe, instead of forcing your deluded beliefs on others, you should find a better way of dealing with the problems of the world. I shouldn’t have my life thrown upside down, just because parents can’t raise their children properly.

    Ricky,

That Zoo Weekly might be considered a resource for how to view and engage with women is exactly why this magazine had to go. The personal issues you speak of are best raised with someone close to you and in person, who can assist you.

So are you against free speech as well? You have made a serious dent in my life and now you want to shut me up as well?

You are really frustrating me. Porn/phone sex lines needs credit cards, if children have credit cards, that is up to their parents to deal with. Talking about sex lives and anatomy is a normal educational thing to do, not anywhere considered porn! Playboy is not porn. Adult shops, children can’t enter. All that is directed at men, who don’t have a problem in purchasing it.

Now, if you have a problem with porn, you really are delusional and not about equality. The people that do it, enjoy it. It helps people ease tension and frustration without using prostitution. Now I am talking about people that have difficulties making relationships and don’t know how to start. If you get rid of everything, you will have a serious problem on your hands.

I am diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, but because I was helped too late, I was never taught how to be social and make relationships. Zoo was helping me see the world and helping me choose which movie to see or music/game to buy. Porn helps sexually, I can’t get a girlfriend. They are two completely different things.

Other people like me, you are shunning, just because you don’t understand. You are worst than the Liberal party, throwing everyone out of your path just because you don’t want to understand. You have created havoc in my life and don’t seem to care. What am I, and others like me, supposed to do now?!

Unfortunately Ricky, I too have had to be an avid reader of this trash for the purpose of this campaign.

“Half naked women” doesn’t amount to porn. However – sexualised images of semi naked women in bikinis or lingerie, along with headlines singling out women’s body parts example: “Breast and Fairest”, interviews asking women about their sex lives and recent photo shoots for Playboy, where they strip, advertising for adult shops, phone sex lines – does amount to a publication promoting porn to minors.

You’re not engaging with the issue at all and I don’t think you intend to Ricky. Please refrain from posting anymore comments here. Its a waste of my time and yours.

Porn? If you consider half naked women as porn, all fashion magazines need to be banned as well.

As I have said to you before, I am an avid reader. I know you are lying.

    Ricky,

Making porn available to minors is not harmless. It is disturbing that people would defend this.

There are no lies spread about the magazine. See slideshow in the article above.

There are some campaigns that I believe in. But this was just ridiculous! What is wrong with you people?! All the lies you spread about the magazine is horrendous! All pf the actual harm being done in the world and you cancel a harmless magazine! People like you is what is wrong with the world!

You can defend their right to childhood

A world free of sexploitation is possible!
