WIN! Instagram rolls out new safety measures for teens

We’ve had another #WakeUpInstagram campaign win, with Instagram announcing the following new measures to help protect young people from predators:

  • Default privacy settings for under-16s
  • Suspicious accounts blocked from finding teens
Instagram Head of Safety, Vaishnavi, shared this statement to Twitter:

Potentially suspicious adults will no longer be recommended teen accounts in Explore, Reels, or ‘Accounts Suggested for You’. They won’t see teen comments under posts or be able to leave comments on their posts; if after all this they still find a teen, they won’t be able to follow them.

The announcement follows our two-year investigation of predatory activity, sexual harassment and exploitation of children - particularly girls - on Instagram. We showed how Instagram features - such as ‘Suggested for You’ - were connecting predators to underage girls.

We're pleased to see these new safety measures and are continuing our work with international campaign partners and Instagram for even more improvements.
