Melinda Tankard Reist on ABC Radio National discussing the #WakeUpInstagram campaign

A coalition of women’s rights groups in Australia, Canada and the United States has called on the photo-sharing giant Instagram to introduce tough new protections for young girls using the site.

The campaign with the hash-tag Wake Up Instagram says the platform is used to groom and harass adolescent and even pre-teen girls who post photographs.

The coalition has collected hundreds of sexually graphic comments posted by men. Its Australian spokeswoman is Melinda Tankard-Reist from the organisation Collective Shout.
