Speaking out can be this easy

Earlier this month Melanie and her daughter were shopping in Ringwood when they passed by a hyper-sexualised poster in the front window of a snow boarding store.

Our motto here at Collective Shout is "Silence is the language of complicity, speaking out is the language of change". And speaking out is exactly what Melanie did.

Melanie contacted Maroondah City Council via their Facebook page.

“Maroondah Council-PLEASE REMOVE THE PORN FROM THE FRONT WINDOW OF THE BALLISTYX STORE 60 Maroondah Hwy Ringwood.”

“Any shop front treating women in a overtly sexual manner such as this will no longer have my custom. Do something ASAP.”

Maroondah City Council were quick to respond and take action.

"Hello Melanie. Our Planning Compliance Officer spoke to the Manager yesterday and passed on your concerns. He has agreed to cover up some of the poster. We will let you know if there are any other developments. Thanks!"

We invite Ballistyx to sign our Corporate Social Responsibility Pledge.

As a community we need to collectively take a stand for women and girls and to take action when we see them being mistreated. Hyper-sexualised advertising shapes attitudes and behaviours that have real life impacts.

If you see hyper-sexualised advertising, be an active bystander and take the next step.
