Tumblr will begin enforcing its new policy on December 17, giving users who host unwanted explicit content an opportunity to take their imagery elsewhere, according to chief executive Jeff D'Onofrio.

Background: Tumblr has always been for children above the age of 13. Children who sign up to the site and enter their accurate birthday immediately have 'safe mode' activated, supposedly to prevent access to porn. As with many porn sites, children can simply change their birth date to avoid restrictions. Tumblr removing pornography altogether is a step in the right direction but it is long overdue.

Tumblr has also been criticised for hosting "pro ana pro mia" content which are "inspiration" pages for those suffering eating disorders. Anorexia Nervosa has the highest mortality rate of all mental disorders. This content is still found on Tumblr.
