Urgent call to action

An urgent call to action on Westfield Shopping Centres:

Over 55,000 of us have signed the petition calling on Westfield to take action on Honey Birdette’s pornified signage and improve their advertising standards.

The CEO of Scentre Group (Westfield AU) has now responded to the petition, saying they are “not in a position” to improve advertising standards in Westfield shopping centres.

Honey Birdette has responded by releasing new ads: a lingerie-clad woman straddling Santa with the tagline “sorry kids! We have given Santa the night off”.

Scentre group claims they have liaised with Honey Birdette and they will be removing some “provocative elements” of their current Santa advertising campaign. However, in a media statement the Honey Birdette spokesperson claims they have not engaged with Scentre group on this ad.

Neither company’s response recognises the fact that the issue is not just the latest Christmas ad, but years of irresponsible advertising from Honey Birdette. Countless complaints have already been made to the Advertising Standards Bureau, yet Honey Birdette often simply replaces the offending ad with even more pornified images. The only current avenue for advertising standards is the ASB, who can take months to respond and have no regulating powers or enforcement authority.

Enough is enough.

We are calling on Westfield and the Scentre group to show some corporate social responsibility and urgently introduce basic advertising standards to ensure their tenant’s storefront signage is family-friendly.

Parents, employees and regular customers should be able to walk around a “family-friendly” shopping centre without seeing larger than life pornified posters that would be banned in a standard workplace setting, right?

Today, Friday 24th November 2017, is the time for direct action. By taking 10 minutes today to ring or visit Westfield Centre management we will ensure that our message is received.
