Media Release: Collective Shout commends Bauer decision to shut down Picture and People titles

Collective Shout welcomes Bauer Media Group’s announcement today that it will cease publishing its Picture and People magazine titles.

Recent editions of The Picture featured nurses as sexually available to male patients and focused on sexual features of female tennis players.

Collective Shout ran a successful campaign against ‘lads mag’ Zoo - another Bauer title - four years ago. More recently the campaign group succeeded in getting 7-Eleven and BP to dump the titles.

Movement Director Melinda Tankard Reist commended Bauer Media Group for the decision. “Bauer has recognised that society has moved on. These sexist titles cannot co-exist in a society that claims to care about sexual harassment and other forms of mistreatment of women,” Ms Tankard Reist said.

"The sexist behavior of the St Kevin’s students just this week is a reflection of boys’ conditioning by a p*rnified culture. They learn early that women exist for their gratification. We can’t change behavior without addressing the cultural normalising of it. A sexist culture grooms sexist boys.

All the women and girls we represent thank Bauer Media for demonstrating corporate social responsibility. May other companies follow their lead.”
